New rubbish collection rotas coming in the New Year
A SWITCH to fortnightly rubbish collections across Cornwall is set to start soon – but Morval residents have no need to panic because we will not be affected until next year.
A new collection regime for the Duchy’s properties is finally set to start this autumn with the first bins being delivered to MID-CORNWALL addresses as early as OCTOBER, yes next week!
A £30-million annual contract for a two-weekly service of emptying bins was agreed by Cornwall Council back in 2021 but it has yet to be implemented as the (reported elsewhere) £300,000 stock of bins has been kept in storage until now.
The new system will do away with weekly rubbish collection services and feature new alternate weekly re-cycling and rubbish collections.
It will also introduce a food waste collection service with all properties getting their own indoor waste caddy and outdoor collection caddy.
But, again, we stress, Morval properties are not going to be affected for a while yet.
Cornwall Council has started sending out letters to residents in Mid-Cornwall (the St Austell/Newquay areas) ahead of the proposed January 2024 switch to the new regime.
After Mid-Cornwall, the service will then roll-out across the four other areas in Cornwall, including Morval Parish (South East Cornwall), possibly taking as long as the next TWO years to finally implement – although there is a suggestion that South East Cornwall could be second in line for the new service later next year.
A letter sent to addresses in Mid-Cornwall says that the new bins will be delivered from October to December in preparation for the new service to start in January.
“Once the new service starts, you’ll need to start separating your food waste from your rubbish ready to put out every week for us to collect in your new food waste caddy,” Mid Cornwall residents have been told.
“If you’re not already, you’ll need to re-cycle your cardboard, glass, plastics, cans, paper and textiles.
“This is because we’ll start collecting your rubbish fortnightly and, in line with most other councils (in the UK? - editor), will only take rubbish put out in the bin we give you with the lid closed.
“If you’re separating your food waste and re-cycling, your rubbish should fit in your wheelie bin or sack - it holds about three to four black bags’ worth.’
For fear of sounding like a broken record… Morval Parish residents will not see any change in their collection service to the New Year at the very earliest – and it could even be longer than the first few months of 2024.
