National Birdwatch weekend on the horizon

THE Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) says that it is still not too late for families to join in this weekend’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring.

All people have to do is commit to spending an hour watching the birds in Morval Parish between Friday (January 24) and Sunday (January 26), and record the birds that land.

You only record the birds that pitch in your view and – even if that’s nothing at all! – you then pass on the information to the RSPB.

You can submit your results on-line or by post.

Across the UK, more than 600,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2024, counting no fewer than 9.7-million birds.

House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds were still down by 60 per cent compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979.

In fact, the RSPB says that it has lost 38-million birds from UK skies in the past 60 years.

Said an RSPB spokesman: “With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch.

“Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.”
