Welcoming refugees into Cornish communities
CORNWALL Council’s Resettlement Service, which support refugees coming to Cornwall, has extended its thanks to all the communities in the county where refugees have been welcomed throughout 2024.
The Resettlement team says that it has both heard and witnessed some heart-warming stories of compassion and welcome, including neighbours providing home-baked cakes, school uniforms, clothes and toys.
Said a spokesperson for the Resettlement Service: “These acts of kindness have been so important to families who have fled their own country because they are at risk.”
Cornwall continues to host more than 390 Ukrainian refugees through the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ programme.
It also welcomed 15 Afghan families in the past year and the Service says that these families are thriving in communities across the county, with children attending Cornish schools and the adults securing jobs and volunteering for local organisations.
And it adds: “As the UK government’s focus changes to a more global approach to displacement in the year ahead, more people are expected to come to Cornwall from different parts of the world”.
The Resettlement Service says that it is looking forward to working with Cornwall’s ‘wonderful communities’ in the New Year, providing a warm welcome and a safe refuge to people who really need it.
