Preventing the spread of avian influenza
FOLLOWING on from the confirmed avian influenza (bird ’flu) outbreak in a poultry flock at Rosudgeon, near Penzance, Cornwall Council’s Animal Health team has reminded members of the public of simple ways in which they can help prevent the spread of the disease.
The virus has also been detected in the wild bird population, so the public are also asked to report any dead wild birds to the DEFRA helpline on 03459 33 55 77.
Experts will then assess if the birds need to be tested, and collection and disposal may be arranged with the landowner.
Cornwall Council says that there are three key things to remember to help prevent the spread of avian influenza:
- Don’t touch dead or sick birds;
- Keep dogs well away from the birds; and
- Report any dead or sick birds to the DEFRA helpline on 03459 33 55 77.
