Overnight roadworks in Nomansland

THE main B3253 road from Shortacross, Widegates, to Looe Bay holiday camp (the old Great Tree) will be closed overnight, between 7.00 pm and 6.00 am, from tomorrow.

Cornwall Council will start resurfacing works at Nomansland – on the stretch of road from Widegates to the Longcoe Farm and the Millendreath junctions – on Tuesday (February 25), and these are expected to continue until Thursday, March 6.

Outside of the overnight closure times, the road will be open as normal.

Originally, the closure was going to come into effect on the Monday (February 24) and would have included a 24-hour closure of side roads and a day-time closure on the main B3253 but those arrangements have been amended to reduce the overall duration of the scheme and minimise the impact on traffic and public transport in the area.

Said Carol Pengelly, Cormac’s surfacing programmer: “We need to implement these measures to give our teams a safe working zone and protect road users while the work is carried out.

“We know that noise associated with night-time working can cause disruption to residents and we understand this can be frustrating. Please be assured we aim to complete the noisiest operations as early as possible and will try to minimise any impact should the works over-run due to unforeseen circumstances.”

She added that letters had been delivered to affected properties and that Cormac would have marshals on site to support residents and businesses needing local access.

All through traffic will need to follow the diversions in place.

“To prevent delays, and to enable us to maintain emergency access please do not park on, or obstruct the highway during working hours,” she said, adding: “Thank-you for your patience while these works take place.”

The principal diversion route for traffic heading west will see more overnight vehicle movements along the A387 from Shortacross, Widegates, on to Morval, Sandplace and Looe.

Traffic heading east or north will use the A387 from Looe to Sandplace and onwards

Diversion signs will be placed at major junctions on the key routes to take non-through traffic away from the closure and keep traffic disruption to a minimum.

“Diversion routes have to be suitable for the type of traffic that would normally use the route. We appreciate they can sometimes be quite lengthy, but in order to carry out the works safely to protect our operatives and road users we need to implement these measures,” said Ms Pengelly.

Access for residents and businesses will be maintained through gateways managed by traffic marshals, but there will still be significant delays.

“Residents will need to stop at the gateways and our staff will help you to get into, or out of the roadworks site safely using the right route,” she said. “Please be supportive by respecting and responding to any speed restrictions and the safety instructions given by staff.

“If our teams need access or have to move machinery out of the way there will be significant delays, or you may be asked to access from the other end of the closure.

“We will always do our best to accommodate day-to-day requirements of people affected by our works, and access will be maintained as much as possible for those people directly impacted by the closure.”

Emergency access will be maintained at all times. But if deliveries are scheduled during the road closure hours, Cormac would appreciate it if advance contact was made via e-mail at: surfacing@cormacltd.co.uk, “we will then arrange for our site agent to make contact to discuss arrangements.”

Residents are also warned that there could be uneven road surfaces, where the old surface has been removed; raised manholes, gullies, and other service boxes, and varying kerb heights when stepping off the footway.

People are also urged to only use the designated crossing points provided.

Added Ms Pengelly: “Please note this information is correct at the time of circulation but is subject to change at short notice, especially in periods of poor weather.

“Resurfacing work is weather-dependant and may be delayed by cold temperatures and heavy rain.

“If works are postponed or cancelled, we will do our best to update the advance notice boards on our sites.”
