Street lights going off from next week

STREET lights in Morval parish will be switched off from next Monday (February 3) as Cornwall Council attempts to save carbon emissions and money.

County councillor Connor Donnithorne, the Cabinet member for Transport, has confirmed that the lights will be turned off from midnight until 5.00 am in a number of towns and parishes, including Morval, as the next phase of the county’s switch-off programme takes effect.

“We have seen a number of examples from across the country and Europe where authorities have adopted this best practice, to save carbon, save costs and to contribute to improving the environment for nature,” said the Conservative councillor for Redruth Central, Carharrack and St Day.

“In Cornwall we began in December 2023 with phase one covering ten parishes, and are now progressing to a more extensive roll-out targeting 1,000 lights per month.

“The ‘programme’ is based on lights that have been replaced by LED during the predetermined maintenance route schedule.”

Cllr Donnithorne added that there had been a careful selection process, including liaison with local police, in choosing the most appropriate street lights to switch off.

“We are sure that soon this will be seen as the norm,” he said. “However we ask the local Parish Councils to support this initiative and be the conduit for either requests to switch back on (in exceptional circumstances and in liaison with the police) or for further lights to be turned off which we would be happy to consider.”
