£25-million Saltash Tunnel works begin with overnight closures
MOTORISTS travelling to Plymouth via the A38 Saltash Tunnel can expect delays until the spring (and, possibly, beyond) as the well-publicised £25-million Government update kicks-in.
National Highways says that that the technology upgrade of the tunnel will, when completed, help keep journeys safe, reliable and reduce the risk of unplanned closures.
The first phase of these extensive works, involving overnight closures, has now started and the restrictions are expected to continue until the end of next month.
The eastbound carriageway of the tunnel (out of Cornwall) is now closed on weeknights (8.00 pm to 6.00 am) while works continue, although currently westbound traffic (into Cornwall) is largely unaffected.
Traffic driving out of Cornwall has to use local diversion routes, although National Highways stresses that it is doing everything possible to keep the tunnel open as normal during the day and at weekends.
“By closing the tunnel only at night, we can reduce the impact on the local community and drivers,” said a spokesman.
At the end of next month, full overnight closures will affect users travelling in both directions.
Evening and overnight traffic leaving Cornwall is currently being diverted from Carkeel roundabout via the B3271 and North Road.
Added the spokesman: “Occasionally, our works may generate some noise for which we apologise.
“We understand that overnight works can be frustrating, but we thank you for your continued understanding while these essential works take place.”
As Cornwall councillor Armand Toms, the long-serving member for Looe East and Deviock (whose ward now includes Morval parish), has often said, motorists must plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
As with any complex highways scheme, dates are subject to change.
Said the National Highways spokesman: “As we move through the scheme, dates will be announced and kept up to date. Please check on-line for the latest information.

“We continue to work closely with a wide range of stakeholders while we confirm the full programme of works for next year. We will share this information with you once it becomes available.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused but thank you for your continued understanding.”
