Tredinnick is back on the map

THE traditional old fingerpost road sign at the turning to the Tredinnick Farm Shop (the Widegates end of the parish) has been repaired – and now just needs a final coat of paint when dry weather and pressing smallholding duties permit!

Some years ago Cornwall Council decided to get rid of these iconic items of roadside furniture and replace them with more modern and clearer road markings.

But not everyone thought it was a particularly good idea and some Cornish parish councils took it upon themselves to salvage the old signs and put them back in use.

Morval parish councillors, too, liked the idea of rescuing the rusty fingerpost remains from the overgrown hedgerow and returning them to their original use.

Cornwall Council gave permission to renovate the sign but, of course, in times where everyone is feeling the pinch, the parish council did not feel it could spend vast sums of money on what might be called a ‘vanity’ project.

Instead, they appealed to the community and, as usual, the good people of Morval Parish did not disappoint with their swift response.

Andrew Thomas, Tim Whiteley and Debbie Tamblyn were in on the project from the outset and, after a few meetings, it was decided that the most suitable location for the renovated signpost would be its original site.

The village green had been considered but it was felt that the cast-iron structure would not be best suited in an area where young people were playing and running around.

Eventually Neil Bassett collected up all the old parts and gave them a good rub-down and clean, then Michael Berry welded them together and Debbie Tamblyn started to re-paint the sign, including the very intricate job of getting the lettering restored to its former distinctive black colour.

Councillors are delighted to see the fingerpost back in situ and have expressed their thanks to the Andrew, Tim and especially Debbie, Neil and Michael.
