Terras junction costs would be ‘considerable’

MORVAL Parish Council’s hopes of improving the junction at Terras Bridge, off the A387 Liskeard-Looe road, have received a knock-back.

Following concerns from local farmers and residents, the parish council had hoped to replace the grassed area by the railway crossing with a more conventional road junction layout but Cornwall Highways manager Will Glassup, while acknowledging that there were usually cars parking near the junction, has said that the cost of improvements would probably be too great.

It wasn’t just a simple case of digging up the earth; re-surfacing the road and splashing the paint on a ‘Give Way’ junction…

As Mr Glassup explained: “The grass triangle has been in place since the first creation of the highway (circa 1875.

“There are private utility services located within the grass triangle; these would effectively need to be lowered and the manhole dropped to the carriageway level. The removal of the triangle would have to facilitate a new junction realignment, or incorporate a new island at highways specification. The linage and signs would need to be moved and re-designed also.

“The costs involved for this would be considerable, and this type of funding for projects that don’t meet the criteria is slim.”

Mr Glassup did, however, offer some suggestions if parking were considered to be an on-going issue, including yellow-line restrictions.
