Cornwall goes to the polls next week
CORNWALL goes to the polls next Thursday (May 1) to elect a new County Council and some parish councils – but not Morval.
There will be two new parish councillors serving Morval Parish from next month – but the good news for cash-conscious Council Tax-payers is that there will be no need for a £2,000 local election.
When nominations were published on Thursday afternoon, April 3, it transpired that eight of the ten existing parish councillors were seeking re-election, along with one newcomer standing for the first time.
However, two sitting parish councillors, Jasmine Fullalove and former chairman John Collings did not seek re-election.
The one certain newcomer is Stephen Murdoch, of Widegates, and with one seat unfilled, it is likely that the new parish council will have to co-opt another member in the coming months.
The eight councillors who have been returned unopposed are (in alphabetical order of surnames): Stuart Hutchins, Andy Jackson, Deborah Kirkland, John Kitson, Toni Patterson, Clive Pearn, Ben Pengelly and Graham Tamblyn.
The new Parish Council will meet for the first time at the Village Hall, Widegates, on Wednesday, May 14.
While there is no Morval Parish Council election, parishioners will be voting next week to elect a new Cornwall County Councillor for the Looe East and Deviock ward (which includes Morval Parish).
Armand Toms has retired from the county council after more than 20 years’ service as an Independent member, and six nominations have been received to be his successor.
They are (in alphabetical order of surnames): Adam Bloodworth (standing as the official Reform UK candidate), Richard Dorling (Conservatives), Mark Gibbons (Independent), Jacqui Gratton (Labour), Joseph Andrew John Hutty (Liberal Democrats) and Jamie Pearn (Independent).
